Can
I leave my clothing inside my dresser drawers?
Yes. Dresser drawers that can be removed, hand carried, and replaced
can be left filled with clothing and soft goods only. Be sure not
to put any fragile items inside the drawers. All other furniture
should be transported empty.

Can
I use a credit card to pay for my move?
Although preferred terms of payment include certified check, cash
or money order, Callahan Bros., Inc. will accept certain credit cards
in lieu of these terms. Please ask your Callahan representative for details.

How
much notice do I need to give to book my move?
As soon as you have selected your mover, you should reserve dates.
You may change the dates, as long as there is availability on the
new dates that you choose. Too often, our customers have made the
mistake of planning on using our services, but have waited too long
to reserve dates. Once we book to capacity, we stop taking moves.
By booking your move as early as possible, you’ll be sure
to get the dates that you want. Four to six weeks notice is a good
idea in the summer months. Three to five weeks notice is appropriate
for the winter months. We will always accept short notice moves
as long as we have availability.

Am
I covered for damage if I do my own packing?
The advantage of doing your own packing is cost savings, and having
the opportunity to purge the things you no longer want. Movers,
however, cannot be responsible for your packing skills. If there
is no external damage to a container packed by its owner, there
will be no liability for damage to the contents. If you have items
of value, you should consider having the movers pack them, and be
sure to select Full Value Protection before the move begins.

What
time do the movers arrive at my home?
Although our movers generally like to get an early start, circumstances
don’t always allow that. You should plan on a start time of
between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., unless other arrangements have been
made.

How will I know the final
charges for my move?
- Interstate Moves are based
on the actual weight of your shipment, and any packing done by
the movers. A final bill cannot be determined until everything
has been loaded onto the truck, and it has been weighed. We suggest
calling our office for your charges in the afternoon, the day
after your shipment has been picked up.

Local Moves are based on the
time it takes to complete the move, and any packing done by
the movers. A final bill cannot be determined until everything
has been loaded onto the truck. Using a standard formula, we
are able to estimate the time it will take to unload the truck,
and prepare a final bill for the move. If you have overpaid,
you will receive a timely refund. If you’ve paid in cash,
you will receive your refund on the move day.

How
can I get boxes for packing myself?
We make boxes available to our customers who choose to do their
own packing. If you are purchasing new boxes, and you live near
one of our terminals, we offer delivery right to your home for a
modest delivery charge. If you would like to take advantage of our
recycled box supply at no charge, they are available on a first
come, first served basis. We do not offer delivery of these boxes,
so they must be picked up.

How
might I transport my plants?
There are some restrictions on transporting plants from state to
state. We are willing to transport your plants as long as they have
been inspected by The Department of Agriculture, within ten days
of your load date. There is no guarantee that your plants will survive
the trip, but it may help to water them more than normal during
the week prior to your move.

How
can I get my automobile to my new home?
On long distance moves, your autos can be transported inside the
moving van with your household goods, billed by weight, or on a
third party car carrier. Your Callahan Representative will be able
to discuss the differences in greater detail, and provide you with
pricing for each.

Am
I required to tip the movers?
Although it is not required, tipping is common. Unfortunately, the
answer to the question of how much to tip is not that easy. Unlike
the restaurant industry, there is no standard percent to use as
a guide. A gratuity offered to the movers will surely be appreciated
no matter how much or how little it is, and no one will be offended
if you do not offer a tip. Since the driver assigned to your move
is the crew leader, and the manager of your move, you can rely on
him or her to distribute your offering amongst the members of their
crew.

What
items are not allowed in the truck?
Aerosol cans, ammunition, explosives, flammable items, hazardous
chemicals, matches, open liquids, paint, perishables, pressurized
cans, thinners, turpentine, and anything that might leak or explode
in the truck. Please use common sense. If you think it might not
be a good idea to ship something, you are most likely right. It
is better to replace potentially harmful items in your new location
than to have your possessions ruined by them. You are also responsible
for draining the fuel from your lawn mowers or any other machinery.
Refillable propane gas tanks for barbeques must be purged and sealed
by a local propane dealer.

What
are the possible hidden charges?
At Callahan Bros., there are no hidden charges, as we discuss your
expectations and plans in great detail to uncover all possible charges
up front. It is possible, however, to encounter “unforeseen”
charges. The two most common unforeseen charges are:
Shuttle Service: Moving household
goods long distance is done using very large trucks. If a large
moving van cannot get close enough to your home to load or deliver,
a smaller truck will be used to shuttle your belongings. There is
a charge for this service. Our representatives can determine whether
or not a shuttle is necessary at the home that we can see, but not
at the home that we can’t see. When in doubt, ask to see a
shuttle cost separately, in the event that it is needed.
Packing: If you are planning
on doing all of your own packing, we expect it to be done by the
time the movers arrive to load your shipment. It is not too uncommon
for our self-packing customers to fall short of a full packing effort.
Our movers will be happy to finish the packing for you, but remember
– there is a cost for this service. Ask your Callahan representative
to prepare two estimates for you, one without packing and one with
full packing, so that you get a sense of how your final charges
might add up, depending on how much packing you can accomplish.
The importance of scheduling an in-home survey
is so that our representative can discuss your needs in person and
see what you are moving, thereby creating a detailed and accurate
estimate of cost. Our intent is to uncover all of the potential
charges up front so that your move is accomplished in the most professional
and cost effective manner, and that there be no unwanted surprises.
